Premise
Near future game of High Tech Low Lives. It’s the tabletop RPG companion to the computer game Cyberpunk RED, and the anime Cyberpunk Edgerunners.
Core Mechanics
Most common roll is 1d10 + Stat + Skill.
Several sub-systems that rely on rolling other dice that varies on a system by system basis.
Quick and Dirty Character Creation
Three methods of varying complexity. They range from simply picking a Role Ability you like and copying several lists for what it gives you, to having complete control over every aspect of your character.
What It Does Well or Interestingly
Life Paths are a fun part of character creation, especially if done alongside everybody else.
Night Markets really drive home the challenge of finding things. Hustle Table is a great way to fill empty screen time, as well as Encounters in Night City. Scream Sheets give plenty of starting points for scenarios.
Plus, the book is very well organized and indexed.
Potential Pitfalls
The game’s main conflict is “Money is hard to come by, things are hard to find, and rent is due.” This sort of mundane complication may be a little too close to real life, and a little too boring for some.
Also, combat is VERY lethal. Be prepared to spend days in game recovering from fights. (Assuming you survive, that is.)
Sections to Pay Attention To
Hustle Table and Encounters in Night City. When used together, these are a great way to randomize long stretches of time.
Final Thoughts
A gold standard all tabletop RPGs should be held to. Simple core rules, simple character creation, but plenty of deeper mechanics for anybody who needs or wants it without being overwhelming. Everybody deserves the chance to play it at least a few times.
